Repeal of Right to Work Sent to Governor Whitmer
The Michigan Legislature passed two bills repealing Michigan’s right to work law.
You may click each bill for text and analysis: HB 4004, which applies to public employees, and SB 34, which applies to employees of private entities. Governor Whitmer is expected to sign both bills.
In 2012, Michigan became a “right to work” state, meaning employees cannot be legally required to pay union dues to be covered by a collective bargaining agreement. The two bills repeal right to work, meaning that, to be covered by the bargaining agreement, employees must pay union dues.
Neither bill received sufficient votes for immediate effect, which means that, if they are signed into law, they will likely not take effect until this fall at the earliest or in 2024.
