It’s Mosquito Season in Michigan – Protect Against Mosquito-Borne Illness (SNF/AL)

This year’s warm, wet spring has produced a variety of biting mosquitoes that can spread diseases. The majority are mosquitoes that hatched in May and are active wooded areas. Some of these mosquitoes can transmit viruses including Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Jamestown Canyon virus and West Nile virus to humans.

Take precautions to protect yourselves and your residents:

  • Apply insect repellents that contain the active ingredient DEET or other EPA-approved products to exposed skin or clothing. Always follow the manufacturer’s directions for use.
  • Wear light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors. Apply insect repellent to clothing to help prevent bites.
  • Maintain window and door screens to help keep mosquitoes outside.
  • Empty water from mosquito breeding sites, such as buckets, unused pools, old tires and other water-holding containers where mosquitoes can lay eggs.
