Michigan House Taking Action on Bills Repealing Right to Work

Today, March 8, House Bills 4004 and 4005 were reported from the House Labor Committee to repeal the Right-to-Work law in Michigan. The full Michigan House of Representatives will likely vote on the bills later today. If passed, they will go to the Senate for consideration.

In 2012, Michigan became a right-to-work state, meaning employees cannot be legally required to pay union dues to be covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Repealing right to work means that, to be covered by the bargaining agreement, employees must pay union dues. HB 4004 pertains to public employees, and HB 4005 applies to private sector employees. Repealing right to work is a top priority for legislative Democrats. We expect the bills will move through the legislative process and be presented to Governor Whitmer for her signature in the coming weeks.
